Cryogenic Operation of a Silicon-Organic Hybrid (SOH) Modulator at 50 Gbps and 4 K Ambient Temperature

September 2022: One key building block for an optical egress link connecting superconducting circuits to read-out electronics operating at room temperature is a cryo-compatible electro-optic modulator. In the paper “Cryogenic Operation of a Silicon-Organic Hybrid (SOH) Modulator at 50 Gbps and 4 K Ambient Temperature” researchers at KIT demonstrated the operation of a silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) at cryogenic temperatures. The device is based on a dedicated material formulation of the organic chromophore and allows for 40 Gbps on-off-keying (OOK) using sub-volt drive voltages at 4 K.

The results were presented as a post-deadline paper at ECOC 2022. ECOC is the largest conference on optical communications in Europe. Only a small number of post-deadline submissions are accepted for presentation by a panel of experts, and those papers represent the latest groundbreaking technical achievements in the field.
