at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)

calls for applications for an open

PhD or Postdoc Position

in the area of

Nanophotonic Devices and Systems for Terabit/s Data Communications

chip

World-wide data traffic is doubling every 18 months. Scaling today’s device and network technologies will soon be insufficient to sustain this development, particularly when regarding power consumption: In Germany, information and communication technology (ICT) accounts already for more than 10 % of the total electric power consumption. A large fraction of the power usage can be attributed to data communication in access and backbone networks. Energy efficiency in data communications must hence be significantly improved within the next years. Enabling energy-efficient processing of Terabit/s data streams in ultra-compact systems, nanophotonic devices will play a key role in this context.

A candidate holding this position will investigate novel device and system concepts for optical signal processing. The work comprises theoretical investigations, numerical modeling and technical realization, which may require novel device fabrication techniques such as silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) integration. Research is performed in close cooperation with international partners from science and industry. Our institute is part of an international consortium seeking to improve energy efficiency in data communications by a factor of 1000 compared to today’s technology (www.greentouch.org).

We are looking for ambitious candidates holding a Master/Diploma or PhD degree in electrical engineering or physics. Applicants should have both theoretical and practical skills, and should be able cooperate with an international team. Candidates with a Ph.D. degree will have the opportunity to actively lead parts of the project. The work is scientifically demanding and features high potential in industrial applications.

Candidates are encouraged to submit their application documents (CV, certificates, references) electronically as one single pdf file to:
