Abstract

“Slow-light effect at the band edge of corrugated waveguides is employed to enhance the modulator’s performance in terms of energy efficiency. The slow-light effect is studied in detail for one-dimensional photonic crystals namely, corrugated waveguides. It is shown such waveguides increase the induced phase shift in the modulator arms due to enlarged group index of the waveguides. It results in modulation efficiency reduction, which can ultimately lead to less energy consumption of the modulator as well. Electrical bandwidth of the modulators are also investigated. It is estimated that energy consumption can be reduced down to 100 fJ/bit at slow-down factor 6. An integrated silicon photonic MZM modulator with a slow-wave architecture to reduce is presented. This structure achieves an 80% enhancement in extinction ratio and has a 14 GHz bandwidth with 1 mm long modulator arms.”
