Topic: "How to measure the isotopic composition of water vapour in situ in higher atmospheric regions?"
Speaker: Dipl.-Ing.(FH) Christoph Dyroff
Abstract:Studies of the transport processes of water vapour into the upper troposphere and the lower stratosphere will contribute to an improved understanding of the water vapour budget in these atmospheric regions. This will help to assess the potential change of water vapour and its impact to the Earth’s radiation budget and climate change.[1]
The H2O mixing ratios typically range between a few thousand parts per million by volume (ppmv) in the tropical troposphere to about 5 ppmv in much dryer lower stratospheric regions, giving rise to the need for a high dynamic range as well as very low detection limits of the order of 1×10−6 fractional absorbance to assess even high dD values around −70 %.
In this talk suitable spectral regions, ranging from the near-infrared to the mid-infrared, as well as the constraints of their selection are presented. An instrumental design along with calibration procedures for the in situ measurement of the isotopic ratios d18O, d17O, and dD in water vapour by means of tunable diode laser spectroscopy is given, and preliminary laboratory results are discussed.

Topic: "Application of SILVACO Device Simulation Framework"
Speaker: O. Shulika
Abstract: Use of commercial simulation programs allows quickly estimate performances of almost any semiconductor device. However, commercial programs have disadvantages as well. The main disadvantage is that simulation strategy developed by authors of a program is imposed on a user. This strategy is not always optimal. Therefore, often, the task of a user comes to that how to get round disadvantages of a program by resources of the same program. In this report the short review of the simulators by SILVACO International will be given. We will consider the ATLAS Device Simulation Framework in more detail and clarify how one can apply this tool to investigation of the physics of semiconductor optical amplifiers.
